I have heard that chewing gum at the same time while cutting onions actually prevents those who are susceptible to watery eyes while performing the said action. Chemically speaking, do you ever wonder how that occurs?

Based on what I recently read on why cutting onions irritates your eyes
there is no basis for that claim.
